Thoughts on Beyond Meat, FFA Week & Calving Season

FREE

Well, I didn’t die. That’s my dramatic remark after taste testing plant-based protein during a South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership alumni seminar held in January. SDARL hosted the informational taste test during the Black Hills Stock Show and had over 30 alumni take part in it. Meat scientist Dr. Amanda Blair of SDSU helped break down the nutritional values […]

More Brazilian beef bound for U.S.

Compiled by CBW Staff The USDA on February 21 okayed the imports of raw fresh beef from Brazil. The United States hasn’t allowed fresh Brazilian beef exports into the country since early 2017 when corruption in the Brazilian meatpacking industry surfaced and other food safety issues were raised. Brazil has had past history of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in different regions […]

Exciting Bull Market

FREE

As February comes to a close so does the first full month of production sales.  Day after day, I am amazed by production sale averages.  Yes, as in past years, some averages are down, some steady, but, many of them are up in 2020 compared to 2019.  Over the past few weeks, we have seen lots and lots of bulls bringing $5,000 and up. I have made a few observations over the last month.  First, bull buyers are looking for a well rounded bull.  From EPD’s to individual performance, bulls need calving ease but the ability to grow fast to weaning and reach market weight in 12 to 15 months is a must. Carcass traits have also become more important to most folks than in the past.  From dairy cattlemen to commercial cattlemen, the push is on to produce more high-quality beef for consumers here in the US and those countries we export to. Structural soundness has become increasingly important.  Unfortunately, over the past decade, many of the popular genetic lines have lacked structural soundness.  I […]
