7/1/2009 11:06:00 AM Sioux Falls Stockyards holds final cattle sale
The Sioux Falls Stockyards has held its final cattle sale after 92 years of business. The stockyards is ending cattle auctions in part because of its inability to comply with city wastewater rules. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association says the growth of suburbs around yards and new ways of marketing cattle, such as video sales, also have hurt stockyards.
The Sioux Falls Stockyards opened in 1917 and grew to become a focal point for livestock in the Upper Midwest, selling as many as 200,000 cattle a year. Manager Paul Scott says Thursday, June 25, 2009, was a sad day.
The 35-acre Sioux Falls property is for sale, listed at $3.5 million.
