Farmers market at N.D. capitol

An aroma of fresh produce, including tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, onions and much more will fill the North Dakota capitol as part of the sixth annual North Dakota Farmers Market Day at the Capitol on Aug. 4.

"Come out and celebrate National Farmers Market Week," said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. "You can buy fresh-picked fruit and vegetables, meet the growers and get recipes and tips on buying produce."

Vendors from across the state will participate in the market, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the top of the Capitol loop on the south lawn.

Aviands Capitol Cafe will be offering $5 brown bag lunches featuring local products. Entrees include either a turkey club wrap or roasted vegetable wrap, accompanied by a bag of chips, a cookie, an apple or orange, and a bottle of water.

Local singer-songwriter Mike Swenson will perform from noon to 1 p.m., and fresh vegetables will be grilled on-site for sampling during market hours.

The market is free and open to the public.

Goehring said the event, supported by North Dakota Department of Agriculture, Going Local North Dakota, the Council of State Employees, Fruit & Veggies More Matters, the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association, and Healthy North Dakota, is part of a nationwide celebration of farmers' markets.

"Aug. 1-7 has been proclaimed National Farmers Market Week," he said. "It recognizes the growing importance and awareness of farmers markets across the nation. The U.S. now has more than 3,800 farmers markets offering farm-fresh, healthy and affordable products."

Goehring said more information on North Dakota farmers markets, including times and locations, can be found on the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association website at www.ndfarmersmarkets.com.
