Numerous Red Angus junior members from across South Dakota and other parts of the nation toured South Dakota for the Junior Red Angus Association of America's annual Junior Round-Up held June 23-28.
"Branding 'Em Red in South Dakota" was the theme for the 19th annual Junior Round-Up, an annual event that rotates around the country each year.
Youth did indeed "brand 'em" as they received a chance to see an actual branding at the Bieber Red Angus Ranch in Leola, S.D. Several of the youth in attendance were unfamiliar with branding since numerous states do not require hot iron brands.
The branding was just one of the many hands-on events held for the juniors throughout the week. Youth also had a chance to judge cattle, conduct a carcass evaluation and learn about cattle handling techniques and feeding.
Tour stops included South Dakota State University, Brookings; JD Red Angus, Mina; Bruce and Lynette Durheim ranch, Ellendale, N.D.; Gill Red Angus, Timber Lake; Broken Heart Ranch, Firesteel; Weidenbach Red Angus, Highmore; Redstone Feeders, Erwin; and Genex Dakota Sire Service in Mitchell.
Members also stayed in a lake-side hunting lodge for two nights, visited South Dakota's capital in Pierre, toured the historic Ft. Pierre Stockyards in Ft. Pierre, stopped at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, and spent an afternoon at the indoor water park, Buccaneer Bay, in Sioux Falls.
The Round-Up is designed to build public speaking and leadership skills while informing attendees about the Red Angus breed as well as the beef industry.
During the week Junior Red Angus members conducted annual business meeting, board meetings, committee meetings and officer elections as well as hosted a variety of national contests.
